Motorbike Helmets UK

In the United Kingdom the law states that all motorcycle owners, when riding their motorbikes on the public high ways of the UK, must wear a British Standard motorbike helmet. The reasons for this law are obvious, for the safety of the rider to avoid or lessen the possibility of brain damage or death due to head trauma if the rider has an accident and comes off the vehicle. Unlike in a car the motorcyclist has not protection other than protective clothing such as leathers or padded suits and the crash helmet, so therefore there is more chance of the bike rider suffering a head injury than the driver of a car.

There are three main types of helmet which riders can choose to wear namely the full face helmet, the open face and the half helmet. The first, full face, is the one you see professional riders wearing on the track. These helmets offer the most protection as they cover the back of the neck, the whole head and the face right down to the chin, this helmet is fitted with a visor which the rider can slide up and down. The full face is secured under the chin with a chin strap to prevent the helmet from moving around or coming off under impact. The half helmet is the same as the full but does not have the protective front covering the mouth and chin area, this is the helmet you will see many ‘bikers’ wearing, as it offers a feeling of more freedom than the full face. The half helmet is generally reserved for mentalists as they offer minimum protection and are prone to come off under collision, these helmets are not legal in the UK.
